Navratri, a Hindu festival, is celebrated to honor the goddess Durga and her various forms. The word “Navratri” is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Nav” meaning nine and “Ratri” meaning night. The festival spans nine nights and ten days, with each day dedicated to a different form of the goddess.
According to Hindu mythology, during ancient times, a demon king named Mahishasura gained immense power and started creating havoc in the heavens and on Earth. Unable to defeat him, the gods combined their powers to create the goddess Durga. Each of them contributed their energy, weapons, and skills to form her.
Durga, riding a fierce lion and armed with various weapons, fought a fierce battle with Mahishasura for nine days and nights. On the tenth day, she finally defeated him, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
During Navratri, devotees observe fasts, perform traditional dances like Garba and Dandiya, and conduct prayers to honor Goddess Durga and seek her blessings for prosperity, health, and success.
